Blossom Learns What Not To Wear

>> Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Actress Mayim Bialik, is best known for three things: playing Blossom, being a super-Jew, and wearing fashion disasters. The three issues collided on Friday when Mayim appeared on What Not To Wear.

Our pop-culture hearts are soaring right now.

We'll get more clips from the show up when they're online, but we'll say now that Mayim did an great job of having a sense of humor, adventure and sassyness in her approach to the whole thing, while still staying true to herslef.

Mayim told People

" I’m a Jewish woman who’s made the decision to wear skirts, so I wear mostly skirts past the knee. I don’t like to go sleeveless – they had me in a sleeveless dress as one of the outfits on What Not to Wear, and I said on air, “I’m really not comfortable showing this much skin.” So it’s really just a preference. They were willing to be flexible – if they showed me a mannequin wearing pants, they said I could also swap them for a skirt."

Here's a sneak peak at her episode:

No matter what she wears, we'll always vote that Mayim's best outfit ever was this little number: pink sequins and a feather boa - Bette Midler style! We heart you, Mayim Bialik!

Judy Gold's Mother Is Paranoid And Delightful

>> Friday, May 8, 2009

Stand-up comedian Judy Gold is an expert on Jewish mothers. She literally wrote the the book on them.

She may have gotten some flack in the past for promoting Jewish stereotypes, but she proves that her comedy comes from a very real, personal place in this classic Comedy Central clip. Like Wendy Spiro, Judy involves her acutal mother in her set, but this time Mom isn't telling jokes. Judy's mom is dead serious. And seriously hilarious.

Top 5 Meshuggene Video Versions of "My Yiddishe Mommae"

Mother's Day is this weekend, people! Today we at I Heart Jews celebrate our fabulous, sassy, loving, hilarious, Jewish Mothers!

Inspired by yesterday's condom commercial featuring the classic song "My Yiddishe Mommae" we went hunting for other odd video interpretations of the song. We found some doozies. Here are our top 5 meshuggene video versions of "My Yiddishe Mommae"

5. DAVID FEINGOLD
What exactly is going on here? Is it an Andy Kauffman-style straight faced comedy bit? A serious moment from the comedian who calls himself "Fat Jewish Guy"? Why is there a random tushy? This is totally bizarre.

(The tushy is at at 1:04, hornballs)

4. FINNISH
There are approximately 1,000 Jews in the entire country of Finland. Why shouldn't they have their own version of the classic? Awesome.

3. BARBERSHOP QUARTET
It is weird to see a barbershop quartet sing something so melancholy. We keep thinking they are going to break into some sort of upbeat version, but alas, it just keeps on being nostalgic. If only Andy Bernard from The Office would join in.

2. HARRIETT SINGS
This one really sneaks up on you. Why wouldn't you suddenly (1:24), without warning cut to "My Yiddishe Mommae" in the middle of an Etta James freedom bus tribute? Seriously. Why not?

1. TOM JONES and JOHN FARNHAM
Two Gentiles rockin' it out! Australian pop icon John Farnham and Welsh sex bomb Tom Jones have an intense "My Yiddishe Mommae" duel, and though they both put up a good fight, Tom Jones is the clear winner.

Stay tuned for more mom comedy (momedy)! We're meshuggene for Mother's Day!

New Awesome Theme Song: It's Good To Be Jewish

I Heart Jews may have a new theme song.

WARNING: This song will get stuck in your head and you will be singing it all day.

We know it isn't kosher, but this terrific Jewish Mother is a total ham! Her dance moves, her charm, and her crazy improvised hand puppets (using her actual hands) are absolutely adorable and makes us want to go call out moms and let her know we love her. And that it's good to be Jewish. And we like it.

Apparently, the woman singing (the cameraman's mom) is actually a song writer, and this is a rare live performance of one of her hits.

It's good to watch this video and we like it. We like it!

Disturbingly Hilarious Phone Sex Prank : “I’m Into Jewish Mother Stereotypes…”

New York-based comedian Gil Ozeri must not own a kosher phone card. Though he does stand-up, sketch and improv, Gil is oft known on the web for his phone sex pranks. He calls in, hits record, asks for something weird, and lets the hilarity ensue.

He's requested everything from Early 90's Slang to Microsoft Word's "Clippy".

And now, the most awesomely cringe-worthy one of all, "I'm into Jewish Mother Stereotypes."

According to Gil, the calls are "100% real, and 100% expensive."

Full video after the jump!

We love that he even outright admits the stereotype. Because, you know, we wouldn't want it to get uncomfortable or anything.
